It’s Ballet and Opera for Zamacona


San Francisco Ballet streamed a live production to selected high schools in the Bay Area on February 17. Frank Zamacona directed The Community Matinee Program - Stage to Screen on the internet. The program, produced by the San Francisco Ballet will consist of a behind the scenes look of how a ballet comes together and performances of various works danced by the students of the San Francisco Ballet school and principal dancers of San Francisco Ballet.

The Sundance Theater in San Francisco’s Japan Town is screening four operas from the San Francisco Opera. Madama Butterfly and three other operas directed by Zamacona, will screen through March. Madama Butterfly will screen in February, Don Giovanni will screen in February and March, and Samson and Delilah and La Rondine will screen in April. Zamacona directing live simulcast for San Francisco Opera

Frank Zamacona will be directing Il Trovatore on Saturday, September 19, live from the San Francisco Opera House. This will be Frank’s 20th opera and his fourth Simulcast to AT&T Park. Ten cameras will be capturing the music and drama of this Verdi masterpiece. Young and old will be able to watch from AT&T Ballpark’s outfield grass or in the stands, as Il Trovatore fills the giant 32 x 9 screen. Last year over 27,000 watched the simulcast.

Later this season Frank will be directing Salome and Otello for theatrical distribution in 2010.

Fado, Opera, Rock n’ Roll

Frank Zamacona helped produce the PBS Pledge Special “Fillmore: The Last Days.” This rock documentary features the final week of the Fillmore West in 1971 and includes appearances by the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Jefferson Airplane, It’s a Beautiful Day, Hot Tuna, The Elvin Bishop Group, Cold Blood and rock Impresario Bill Graham. This special will run on PBS stations beginning in late May, early June. In the San Francisco Bay Area, KQED will air it on KQED, Channel 9 on June 1 at 10:30 pm and June 3 on KTEH channel 54 at 10:30 pm. Zamacona makes an appearance in-studio along with Elvin Bishop and Ben Fong Torres.

Frank and crew went on location to the Napa Opera house to capture the famed Portuguese Fado singer Mariza. This in-concert piece will be featured in the upcoming Steve Talbot produced PBS pilot, “Sound Tracks.” This program is scheduled to air in the summer/fall of 2009.

Coming up on June 5, Zamacona directs his third Opera Simulcast for Opera at the Park. “Tosca” will be shot live from the Opera house in San Francisco and fed via fiber to the San Francisco Giants AT&T ballpark to over 24,000 fans while they enjoy their hot dogs and beverages for this yearly event. Later this summer, Zamacona will be directing “Porgy and Bess” and “La Traviata.” These productions will be distributed to performing arts and indie movie houses.

Zamacona moves into 2009 with Comedy, Ballet and Politics

Frank’s 2009 started out with a bang as he production managed Lisa Lampenelli’s first HBO Special. The Queen of Mean special shot in San Rosa at the Wells Fargo Center, premiered on HBO in January. The DVD and CD will be released on March 31.

Zamacona had the pleasure of directing his first ballet for the San Francisco Ballet. Frank and crew taped in HD at the San Francisco Opera House. This Swan Lake production had entirely new projections, set and costumes. Zamacona directed the Link TV Special, “Who Speaks for Muslims.” This hour program was anchored by PBS’ Newhours Ray Suarez and featured Dalia Mogahed from the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies and Reza Aslan, a fellow at the University of Southern California’s Center for Public Diplomacy. This production will air in April.

In early February, Frank was the associate director for Chevron’s yearly company meeting. The live 90 minute broadcast originated from sites in the San Francisco Bay Area and Houston, and was seen by Chevron employees world wide.

Impact’s medical broadcast and webcast unit hired Zamacona to direct their Los Angeles program on colorectal tumors.
